JOSE MARÍA CURBELO, pianist

 
 

Born in Gran Canaria (Spain), the pianist José Mª Curbelo accomplishes an intense and experienced labour as concert pianist (soloist, piano duo, chamber music groups and collaborative pianists for singers) and piano professor. He has toured in many concert halls in Spain, New York City, Argentina, Chile, México, The Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Italy and Luxembourg and he has played as soloist with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas and Orquesta del Atlántico, conducted by R. Sánchez-Araña, I. Ramos, Thomas Rösner and I. Costes. Moreover his performances has been broadcast in Spain and Argentina. Since 2003 he has been teaching piano at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias, both in Gran Canaria and Tenerife and has been invited to give lectures and masterclasses in Spain and Conservatories and Universities in Europe and USA such as HKU Utrechts Conservatorium (Holland), Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität (Austria), Foundation for Iberian Music, CUNY (New York, USA), Harvard University (Boston, USA), University of Utah (USA), Akademia Muzyczna in Krakow and Poznan (Poland), Music Conservatories in Novara, Trieste and Como (Italy), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).


Furthermore, he is currently artistic coordinator of Festival Atlántico, International Relations coordinator at CSMC, external evaluator of the National Agency SEPIE and official member of different cultural assocation such as Zarzuela por el mundo, International Academy of Performing Arts and Science and PROMUSCAN.


He finished his piano and chamber music Bachelor Degrees at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Conservatory of Music with outstanding grades. Afterwards, he moved to Barcelona where he had one of the experiences that has had most influence on his performances: the classes and tips of the pianist Alicia de Larrocha and Carlota Garriga for more than seven years. There he specialized in the Spanish music performance for piano, piano duo and chamber music, receiving the diploma “Specialization” and the Master degree of Spanish Music from the Academia Marshall (Barcelona). He has also developed his skills with excellent pianists such as Ferenc Rados, Jan Wijn, A. Golovine, Barry Douglas, Helen Krisos, E. Moguilevsky, Alan Weiss, S. Mikowsky, Paul Badura-Skoda, Charles Rosen, Carmen Bravo Vda.de Mompou…


He has been awarded in several national and international piano and chamber music competition in Spain, such as Ciutat de Carlet, Ciutat de Manresa, Cajacanarias, Ciutat de Vinaros, Pedro Espinosa, Musiquem de Lleida, etc...


Back in 1991, he teamed up for the successful piano duo Duo Curbelo with his twin brother Oliver, giving recitals in several Festivals in Europe and Southern America. Jose’s enthusiasm for chamber and vocal music has led to him to be involved in different projects g as a pianist with esteemed performers, singers and dancers quite often: mezzo Nancy Fabiola Herrera, saxophonist Jorge Betancor, sopranos Judith Pezoa and Estefanía Perdomo, dancer Anna de la Paz, bassoonists Salvador Sanchís and Miguel Ángel Mesa, Boogie woogie dancers Thorbjorn Urskog and Flora Bouchereau... offering recitals in Europe, Northern and Southern America.


He has released three CDs for piano duo with his brother for Columna Music, Klassicat and SEdeM and another one with Cuarteto de saxofones Atlántico in their album for saxophone quartet and piano repertoire.


Piano professor at Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias since 2003, he ran the piano departament from 2007 to 2010 and has provided piano and chamber music tuitions, whose students have been awarded in several international competitions. Because of his interest in piano education in all levels and ages he has lectured at Escuelas Artísticas de Moya for 4 years. He is currently piano professor and main coordinator of the Department of International Relations at CSMC, managing the European exchange program Erasmus+. To this end, he has created the CSMC’s Erasmus website.


Interested in research issues, he has got the diploma for Advanced Studies which leads to doctorate studies on the topic of the musician E. Granados. Furthermore, he has presented papers in conferences and has authored research articles related to this composer in the international journals “Música y Educación”, “Diagonal: an ibero-american music review”, “El Artista” and on the report “Reshaping Hispanic Cultures of Observatory of the Spanish language and Hispanic Cultures” of Harvard University. Besides he has supervised many research projects to students at CSMC.
